10 ways to avoid office politics

When you’re at work, you do like to catch up with your employees. However, eventually, office politics might eventually come up. If you want to avoid talking about these topics, what can you do?

Be Aware of Them

You should be aware of the politics that come into play in an office environment. If you aren’t, you could bring them up by mistake and make a mess of your conversation.

Excuse Yourself
Sometimes, you are going to find yourself in the middle of a conversation about office politics. Just excuse yourself and go to the bathroom or get a cup of coffee to avoid the situation.

Just Listen
In certain situations, you might get trapped into a conversation about these topics. Instead of saying something and getting yourself into trouble, just nod your head and listen to the person speak.

State Your Level of Discomfort
If you are brave enough, you can just tell people that you do not want to talk about these subjects. Just be aware that this might cause people to talk about you or have a different opinion of you than they did in the past.

Don’t be a Target
It’s also possible that you could become the center of the office politics chat. Just do your job, take care of what you need to do and head home at the end of the day to avoid becoming the center of drama.

Don’t be Uncomfortable
Maybe the conversations have gotten so intense that you are starting to feel uncomfortable with them. In that case, you might need to have a conversation with your boss. You don’t want to tattle on people, but you can let your boss know the general sense of what’s happening.

Managerial Duties
In the event that you are in charge of a group of people, you can try to move their conversations in a different direction. You can suggest that they do not talk about these particular topics while in the office.

Host Seminars
If you are the boss or manager, you could look into hosting some seminars. One of the topics could be about appropriate workplace conversation and how some topics of conversation can only lead to problems and drama.

Keep to Yourself
It’s important to have social bonds with your co-workers to some extent, but you do not have to share everything with them. If you are uncomfortable with the conversations they have, just try to keep to yourself a bit more.

Understand the Consequences
Simply thinking about the potential consequences of these conversations might be enough to steer you away from having them in the future. Talking about office politics can create a whole slew of problems and make a big mess in the workspace. Use these tips to avoid any such talks about this particular topic.
